Christmas
Holiday Coconut Nests x3
"Christmas coconut nests" are a festive variation of a classic coconut macaroon or no-bake chocolate coconut treat, shaped into a nest and decorated for the holiday season
Homemade Coconut Nests
Homemade versions are generally simple to make, often requiring just a few ingredients. There are two primary preparation methods: baked macaroon-style or no-bake with melted chocolate.
Baked Macaroon Nests (Egg White Base)
These cookies have a chewy interior and a crispy, toasted exterior.
- Ingredients: Sweetened shredded coconut, egg whites, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Process:
- Combine the coconut, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a bowl, then fold in beaten egg whites until well mixed.
- Scoop the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and form a nest shape using your thumb or the back of a spoon to create an indentation.
- Bake until golden brown (usually around 15-25 minutes at 325°F-350°F).
- Once cooled, fill the centers with ganache, melted chocolate, or small candies.
No-Bake Nests (Melted Chocolate Base)
These are quick, easy to make, and often involve fewer ingredients, making them great for involving children.
- Ingredients: Melted chocolate (milk, semi-sweet, or white candy coating) and shredded coconut.
- Process:
- Melt the chocolate in a microwave or a double boiler.
- Stir the shredded coconut into the melted chocolate until fully coated. (Toasted coconut can also be used for extra flavor).
- Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto parchment paper and shape them into nests with an indentation in the center.
- Immediately place candies or other festive items into the center.
- Refrigerate until the chocolate has set (about 30 minutes).
Christmas Decorations
To make the nests suitable for Christmas, you can:
- Use red and green mini chocolate eggs or jelly beans for the "eggs".
- Add a dash of green food coloring to white chocolate coating for a festive look.
- Sprinkle with crushed candy canes or holiday-themed sprinkles once the chocolate is added.
Whether homemade or store-bought, these treats offer a fun and delicious way to celebrate the holiday season.
